Don’t use a low calorie diet until you read this

Low calorie or controlled-calorie diets are a disaster for anyone wanting to lose weight and keep it off in the long term. In fact its painfully obvious if we examine the facts and assumptions behind the theory. Here is the lowdown of this disastrous concept of weight loss.

1. To lose weight you have to reduce the number of calories you are eating to a point where the calories you eat are less than the calories you consume. That much is obvious. This deficit of calories will force the body to use its stored energy reserves (fat) and you will lose weight.

2. To achieve this your calorie intake must be less than your maintenance calorie intake. There are useful websites that you can find that supply this. Just type in calorie counter for maintenance and choose the first on the page. Using an example I created an imaginary female friend aged 25 years of age, 5 feet 4 inches and weighs 110 pounds. She exercises moderately 3 times a week. The calorie counter tells me she needs 1760 calories per day for maintaining her existing weight and should reduce this to 1408 calories a day to reduce weight. This works out to be about 20% fewer calories. The site suggests 1056 calories for extreme weight loss, but well ignore that for now. At 1760 calories a day, she can eat well, wont feel hungry and wont be tempted to snack between meals. There are plenty of meal planners available which she can use to work out her 1760 calories per day.

3. Of course the type of calories our imaginary friend eats matter. If he fill up on empty calories like processed foods full of sugar, he might lose weight but he will be starving my body of essential nutrients and he will end up with cravings because his body needs these. When he fill up on low GI food, proteins, fruits and vegetables he will feel fuller for longer and this will work in his favor. Eating high GI foods will have the opposite effect and he will feel hungry sooner and feel starved all the time.

4. Now what happens if she use the extreme figure of 1056 calories or even less? Some extreme weight loss sites recommend 1200 calories a day foe men and 1000 calories for women. a. Never go on a low calorie diets under any circumstances. Calculate your optimum maintenance calorie intake then reduce this by 20% but no more. So my lady friend would need to eat around 1408 calories a day if her maintenance calorie intake is 1760. What are your needs from the calculator?

b. Introduce at least 3 sessions of exercise a week into your lifestyle. This should be for no less than 30 minutes at a time and it should include moderate to vigorous cardiovascular exercise as your fitness improves. Exercise burns calories. More importantly it releases hormones that make you feel good about yourself (endorphins) and they moderate your diet as well as your metabolism.

c. Use free weights exercises daily. Free weight build muscle faster than exercise like walking and the more muscle the faster your body burns fat. Also using free weights help protect you from osteoporosis and helps build better posture, balance and general strength and sense of well-being. Weights are essential for weight loss and toning your body. Nothing else comes close.

d. Join a sporting club, association or some other group where you can add to your exercise load. I sail racing skiffs with my son and do body board surfing which I find very demanding and which burns off the pounds. Its also really good fun. As for a vegetable, a bag of organic baby carrots cost about $2.00. When it was all said and done, a healthy home cooked dinner for a family of four costs about $25.00. This is not including the time spent making the dinner and doing dishes afterwards.

Lack of health choice at restaurants makes eating right difficult. According to Foodfacts.info, in 2005 fast food chain, Wendy’s, pulled their fruit salad option after only ten months on the menu, sighting low sales. Many fast food chains have started to offer healthier choices such as Subway which offers raisins and yogurt, and Wendy’s offers mandarin orange fruit cups in place of fries. Some sit down restaurants have followed suit such as Red Robin which will allow you to order either a petite hamburger patty or a Boca Burger substitute for any of their burgers. Unfortunately other places do not offer alternatives or the alternatives are not well advertised by the prospective restaurant. Red Robin might offer a Boca patty substitution but it is in fine print which is barley visible at the very bottom of their menu.

When eating out, often you do not have control over the serving sizes. For instance at McDonalds, e medium fry package now has nutritional facts listed on the side. It shows how many calories are in that amount of fries along with the sodium content. What they are not taking into account is the amount of salt added to the fries after cooking, and the person filling the container usually over fills. Therefore the nutritional facts and serving size information provided is inaccurate.

As adults we need to set a good example for our youths. Children see how much their parents eat and they think this is the right amount of food for them. If you are always taking your children to McDonalds because you simply don’t want to cook all you are doing is setting them up for to then be obese. What is BMR and What Does It Have to Do with Weight Loss?

We know very well that we need to limit our calorie intake in order to lose weight. But by how much should we reduce it? As a matter of fact, our body has a daily calorie requirement, which is nothing but the minimum amount of calories it needs to perform its day to day functions, such as digesting foods, maintaining the normal heart rate and blood pressure, controlling and maintaining your breathing, etc.

If you consume more than this minimum calorie requirement, you gain weight, but if you provide your body fewer calories than what it needs, your body would refuse to burn fat! In order to know how many calories are enough for your body, you need to know your Basal Metabolic Rate, or BMR as it is called.

Once you know your Basal Metabolic Rate, it won’t be difficult for you to determine your body’s minimum calorie requirements. After that, you would simply consume the required number of calories and leave the rest to your body!

Remember though that there are a number of factors which may affect your BMR. Some of these factors can be controlled by you, while others are bitter realities of life that have to be accepted since they can neither be controlled nor influenced by you. In this article, I will discuss the ‘controllable’ factors.

1. Your daily activity level: Your body’s minimum daily calorie requirement depends on how much energy it needs to perform its daily activity, and this in turn depends in a big way on your current activity level. Here is a simple example. If you are sitting on your couch or near your computer desk the entire day, your calorie requirements would be less than that of a person who is always active and moving.

The more you move the more energy your body needs. You can do two things about it: you can either increase your activity level in order to match your current calorie intake, or cut down on your calorie intake to match your sedentary life. I would recommend the former approach anyway.

2. Your body weight: An underweight person would have different calorie requirements than one who is either overweight or of normal body weight. Bear in mind that the metabolic rate of an overweight person is not higher than that of a normal individual. However, since the overweight individual has a bigger body, the heart needs to work very hard in order to circulate blood to the entire body; in fact, the more overweight you are, the more difficult your heart has to work.

And the harder your heart works, the more energy your body needs in the form of calories. So in a way, your minimum calorie requirement is also influenced by your bodyweight. The obvious solution to this problem is weight loss.

There are some other factors which contributes your BMR as well, such as your gender, age, height, etc., but since you have no control over these factors, it would be pointless to discuss them here.

However, you can certainly influence the two factors I mentioned above, by boosting your metabolic rate as well as increasing your activity level. You can do that either by working out in the gym or getting yourself involved in outdoor sports.
